3 Home Remedies To Temporarily Relieve Toothaches

A toothache can interrupt your life and inhibit normal daily activities. There are many potential causes for tooth pain including: gums, bone, ligament, muscle and nerve issues.  An appointment with your endodontist will help determine the underlying problem, however, for immediate relief, here are a few home remedies to try:

  1. Over-the-Counter Medications: Painkillers are a temporary, effective source of relief for toothaches before your dental appointment. Ibuprofen (Motrin) reduces inflammation and pain. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) also reduces pain, but does not have any anti-inflammatory properties.  These two medications can be alternated for more effective pain relief.  Do not exceed the dosages indicated on the labels.
  2. Salt water: Salt helps alleviate inflammation in the gums by lowering the bacteria levels in your mouth.  This can temporarily lessen the pain of toothaches and also may help stop the spread of bacteria. Add a teaspoon of table salt with a cup of warm water and swish the mixture in your mouth for 30 seconds. Repeat as often as necessary throughout the day. This remedy can also be helpful resolving canker sores!
  3. Clove oil: Soak a cotton ball with 2-3 drops of clove oil and ¼ teaspoon of olive oil. Place the cotton ball near the painful tooth. Clove oil acts as a mild local anesthetic and has anti-bacterial properties.

These home remedies only temporarily relieve pain associated with a toothache.  Your endodontist will evaluate your tooth pain and recommend appropriate treatment to help you return to your normal daily activities.
